Thinking about Shopify Warehousing and Fulfilment

Whether you're a seasoned ecommerce business or just starting out, you’ve probably considered warehousing and fulfilment as a means to streamline your operations and devote more time to your sales and marketing activities.

Outsourcing this element of your business is common when looking to scale, however it can be difficult to find a warehouse and fulfilment supplier that meets your unique requirements and has a system that integrates with your Shopify store.

Many warehouses already have well established systems in place and provide a means for you to connect to them with your Shopify store. These warehouses will typically use one of three methods of connection for you to transfer order data to them for fulfilment:

  1. Scheduled data transfers (csv file transfers via ftp)
  2. Connected web services
  3. An API of some description

Some warehouses may already connect with Shopify stores, which could save you a lot of time and money when deciding on which service to go with. We would always recommend looking around to see if you can find warehousing with existing connectors to Shopify if you don't already have a warehouse in place.

Providers of warehousing, shipping and fulfilment services are are also known as Third Party Logistics Companies (3PL), so try searching for:

  • Shopify 3PL suppliers UK
  • Shopify 3PL suppliers US
  • Shopify 3PL suppliers Australia
  • Shopify 3PL suppliers Brazil
  • etc.

You can also take a look in the Shopify App Store to see if there is an existing integration for your warehouse:

If you already have a warehouse, or find a 3PL company that you'd like to work with, but they don't currently have a Shopify Integration, then that's where we might be able to help.

Who should drive the integration?

3PL companies are usually good at spotting opportunities and Shopify's growth is something that will no doubt be on their radar, therefore, we would always advise that Shopify Merchants should ask if the Warehouse company are prepared to fund an integration. If not, then you need to weigh-up whether the benefits of your selected Warehouse outweigh the cost of funding the integration yourself.

We are happy to work with either party and can help with discussions with Warehouse Companies to convey the upside of creating a Shopify integration that can handle multiple Shopify Merchants rather than just yours.

Our Shopify warehouse integrations

Whether building a Shopify warehouse integration for a single Merchant or for many Shopify merchants, the integration process is relatively similar. Most of the integrations that we build between Shopify and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) will do the following:

  • Send either the entire order information from Shopify to the WMS or part fulfilments.
  • Allow you to set-up rules to determine which orders should be sent to the WMS, i.e. a rule could be set-up to not send an order if a particular payment gateway was used.
  • Transform the order data into a particular format according to a set of rules that you define
  • Receive fulfilment notifications and Shipping status from the WMS back into Shopify
  • Receive Tracking Courier / URL information from the WMS back into Shopify
  • Receive Inventory level updates from the WMS back into Shopify

There are limitless variations on these core interactions and we will work with the WMS administrators and any other 3rd party system stakeholders to ensure that you achieve your ideal workflow.
